Roses of Eyam

Back to News Index

An Academy is promising an arts extravaganza as students take to the stage, perform music and exhibit their work.

The final touches are being put to Arts Week at Trinity Academy in Thorne, which runs from July 12-16.

The range of events and performances will make it the school's most extensive celebration of the arts so far.

The local community is invited, with some events taking place in the evening.

The week kicks off on Monday, July 12 with a Celebration of Dance 2010, starting at 7pm and bringing together groups from several secondary and primary schools, as well as dance schools from the local area and Trinity Academy's own dancers.

A free Summer Concert takes place on Tuesday, starting at 5.45pm, opening with refreshments and relaxing music in the courtyard.

The concert will see Trinity students showcasing their musical talents, with everything from rock bands to classical.

The Academy's annual production is staged on July 14-15 with a cast comprising 30 students from Year 7, 8, 9 and 10.

The Roses of Eyam, by Don Taylor and based on a true story, is set in 1665 when the village of Eyam finds itself battling the plague. The villagers face a terrible decision: do they flee their village in the hope of outrunning the plague or do they stay?

The performances start at 7pm and tickets, available from Academy reception, are £4 for adults and £2 for concessions.

The week culminates in an art exhibition evening on Friday.

Trinity's art department will be running events throughout the week, including workshops on printing, textiles, photography and trips to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, leading to students' work going on display in the invitation only event.

Art students will be presented with awards for outstanding commitment and contributions, and find out whether they have been awarded Art Achievement ‘Goldmarks'.

Throughout the week the food technology department will also be running events to celebrate the art of food.

For more information, telephone the Academy on 01405 813000.
