Key Stage 4

The Academy is very pleased with the tremendous progress made during 2008/9. The dramatic increase in the percentage of students achieving 5+ A*-C inc E&M from 19% in 2006 to 55% this year means that;

  • Significant improvement has been sustained over the past 4 years;
  • For the first time the 5+ A*-C inc E&M figure has exceeded the national average;
  • Student attainment is well above the progress made by similar students in the top 25% of similar schools (FFT 'D' estimate 42%);
  • Student attainment is well above the progress made by similar students in all schools (FFT 'A' estimate 46%);
  • Contextual Value Add has risen to 1036.5 (up from 1024.6 and the 7th percentile in 2008);
  • In the local league table the Academy has moved from 16th out of 17 secondary schools to 3rd position. This is highly significant as the top 4 school in the LA have remained unchallenged for numerous years.

Post-16

The numbers of students in the Sixth Form has dramatically increased from 71 in 2005 to 227 in 2009. It might have been expected that an increase in numbers would lead to a decrease in academic standards due to increased class sizes and a lower average level of attainment on entry to KS5.

However, during this time the academic standards in the Sixth Form have continued to rise and as a consequence the number of students going on to study at university has increased from 11 in 2006 to 48 in 2009 and this year there are 80 UCAS applications in process. Many of these students come from families where no relative has previously attended university.
