Business and enterprise in the curriculum

We believe that developing the enterprising minds of students should not be detached from their everyday learning opportunities.

With this in mind, a unit of work has been developed in each subject area to explore enterprise capabilities. There is also a subject-related definition of enterprise. These units of work are delivered throughout the year so that the students benefit from a regular enterprise focus in lessons.

Teachers are encouraged to work with external agencies, such as Young Enterprise North East, Middlesbrough Football Club's Enterprise Academy and Make Your Mark to deliver key business and enterprise messages.

We are keen to invite real business people into the Academy and arrange visits to organisations, helping to further the learning of our students.

Extra-curricular enterprise

In order to bring enterprise into the 'big picture', we also want to develop opportunities for students outside of the classroom environment. We are constantly extending our programme of extra-curricular enterprise events to support the curriculum focus.

In order to introduce students to enterprise and get them talking about it, we created VoiceBox - a student voice concept endorsed by SSAT.

In addition, 2009 is the first year that the Academy has included an enterprise challenge in the house competitions schedule, which culminates in May.

We have launched five, new Make Your Mark clubs. Make Your Mark is a national network of student-led enterprise groups. There are currently over 300 schools and colleges in the network, run by students and supported by a teacher or tutor.

The groups usually meet outside of lesson time to make enterprising ideas happen. The new clubs are TKA Radio, Let's Get Cooking, Make a Mint, House Colours and One Big Idea.
