Prize giving

Our annual prize giving ceremony celebrates students’ successes and talents, marking a year of hard work and outstanding achievement.

In front of fellow class mates, teachers and parents, awards are presented for effort, achievement, sport, music, poetry, citizenship and merit and in special areas, such as progress in learning and work experience.

Prize giving 2010

King's students were urged to continue on their adventure of selflessness after a record year of helping the community. Parents and guests attending the sixth annual prizegiving at The King's Academy heard how students had made a difference with excellent exam results, sporting successes and notable events within the Middlesbrough community.

The event held on Tuesday 14th July focused on the theme 'Light and Salt', with awards presented for effort, achievement, sport, music, poetry, citizenship and in special areas such as progress in learning and work experience.

Guest speaker the Rev Jon Burns had high praise for the school and the students. He said: "It is wonderful to see young people become what they can be. I love this school because it gives you the opportunity to give something back. We all have a choice as to how we treat other people. I would recommend to you that a selfless life is a much greater adventure than a selfish life."

The audience heard that the Academy had raised 2,700 for the Haiti disaster appeal, the highest single charitable donation in six years. One student, Stephen Cox, has been offered a place at Queen's College, Cambridge, the first student to do so from the Academy.

A host of awards were presented by Rev Burn to our students. The Chairman's Award for Musician of the Year was presented by David Vardy to Niko McHutcheon; the Poetry Award went to James Wright with his poem entitled 'My Dad'; the Short Story Award went to Ben Rowden; the House Cup was awarded to the House of Rome and Outstanding Student of the Year was presented to Matthew Elcoate.

Mr Drew said: "It has been a truly remarkable year, but as we move forward we want to be successful at what we do, not complacent; we want to be confident, not arrogant; and we want to continue to make a difference."
