The Sage Singathon: The More the Merrier
Gateshead's world-famous music hall The Sage swapped its usual high-profile performers for an excited group of 4-16 year olds in their annual Big Sing event.
Forget your typical choir and their Hallelujah choruses, and imagine around 4,000 young people and their enthusiastic music teachers, led by an eight-piece band, singing everything from Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer to traditional Welsh lullabies.
It is quite amazing how much sound a Sage-full of young people can produce - and with such passion, shown in everything from Mrs Wells wearing her ‘Big Sing 2010' hat to the Year 9s' and 10s' over-the-top actions to Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.
In the week leading up to the event we welcomed into College one of the lead singers from the band to teach us some of the songs. She said we were the only group she had ever taught "who mastered a three-part harmony" in the double period we spent with her!
We returned to school after the singathon still bursting with excitement, even after two hours of belting out the Bare Necessities, renditions of Digga' Dog and our song, A Long Way Home, to be seen at Presentation Evening.
We certainly loved every minute of it and look forward to up-and-coming events like this around the North-East.
