Blood Brothers

Back to News Index

On 21 April the Year 10 Drama group travelled to Liverpool to see a matinee performance of Willy Russell's world famous Blood Brothers.

Anticipation was high amongst the students and indeed staff, especially as they had been studying the text for the previous three weeks.  Seeing the performance in Liverpool's Empire Theatre was an added bonus as the play is set in the city, giving a homecoming atmosphere to the performance.

Always making the most of every opportunity, Mrs Wells even managed to teach a full Drama lesson on the journey down whilst in the back of the College minibus, exploring the key themes of the play.

Being a matinee performance, the theatre was packed with schoolchildren, all excited for the show.  The lights went down and the theatre became silent.  Everyone seemed to hold their breath.  The first chord was struck and the group was captivated from that point onwards.

As the curtain fell for the interval, the room erupted with an excited buzz of conversation, everyone praising the cast for some superb performances.  Everyone was looking forward to the climax.

Again the room was instantly quiet as the curtain rose for the second act.  The group was looking forward to seeing the play unfold, but knowing how events would turn out, they were slightly apprehensive of what lay in store.

The play advanced at a pace, building up to an emotional climax.  When the play ended, there wasn't a dry eye in the house, and the Emmanuel group was no exception.

Jordan Bone (10 Peterson), said he "couldn't wait to do the play in lessons".

Everyone enjoyed the day, including the members of staff, to whom the students are grateful for accompanying them.
